Don’t know if this belongs with one of the links below or is just the state of footnotes at the moment.
Steps to reproduce
Open Sandbox
Paste the following into a note
footnote 1[^1]
footnote 2[^test]
footnote 3[^3]
[^1]: [help](https://help.obsidian.md)
[^test]: [docs](https://github.com/obsidianmd/obsidian-docs)
[^3]: a [main](https://obsidian.md/)
Expected result
Footnotes 1~3 render as links.
Actual result
Footnotes 1 & 2 don’t render as Markdown links. If any character is inserted between the :
and the first [
, the link becomes valid.

Using the dev tools, it doesn’t look like there’s a link at all after footnote 1 & 2.

Presume this is a live-preview issue—I have read posts about live preview not loading footnotes cleanly.
Your sample text creates three links (in my tests using 1.1.6) when viewed in reading mode. See the same with the insider build?
Steps to reproduce
In Live Preview mode, add a footnote with a link immediately at the start.
Expected result
It should look like a link.
Actual result
It only shows source code, unless you add another character between the colon and the square brackets:
Source:
[^3]: [link](https://forum.obsidian.md/) not rendered as link
[^4]: a [link](https://forum.obsidian.md/) properly rendered as link
Both render fine in Reading mode.
Environment
Obsidian 0.14.0 (also 0.13.33) on mac…

Ha! That’s the post I knew had to be there.
Yeah, 1.2.3 is the same here. I know source/Live Preview doesn’t auto-render footnotes, but still odd behavior if someone types them in manually.

How did I miss that in your first post?
Sorry.
For anyone happy with a fudge:
A visual workaround is to use an invisible separator between the colon and the opening square bracket in the footnote.[^Oh]
Don’t know if it will copy in to forum.[^La]
But here goes.[^Ra]
