While formatting notes, sometimes I do not remember all the formatting options available to me. I do not remember what it’s keyboard shortcut is or what symbol do I need to type.
Proposed solution
It would be nice if all the formatting options were visible and clickable with mouse in a toolbar at the top of the note under the tabs. This toolbar can be made to be hidden in case others want a minimal look.
Current workaround (optional)
I have made a formatting note that I refer to whenever I want to remember how to format something.

Formatting toolbar built-in to Obsidian Desktop NOT as a Plug-in request, plus Obsidian Vault URL Hotkey or CMD work-a-round
This includes what I am suggesting but that post was too long and had other suggestions mixed in. That post is now in ‘feature archive’ and cannot be commented on. The explanation to ‘feature archive’ is that it includes features that have been implemented. But I do not see this feature implemented [v 1.0.3]. There was also no reply on that post whether the suggestion would / would not be implemented. Therefore, I am making a new post.
While there are at least two community toolbar plugins, these do not fully replicate the functionality of the mobile toolbar, nor do they allow changes made to the mobile toolbar to be synced to the desktop toolbar.
Merging the mobile toolbar code into the desktop version would be the most elegant solution. This would also make Obsidian desktop more accessible to less technical users and widen the user base.
Yup I’d agree. Really love the simple formatting toolbar in the mobile on my iPads and iPhone and really miss it when I’m on my Mac laptop. If merging the code over would be possible that would be amazing. Shoot make it a pay for feature if you need it. I’d pay to have that feature. Yes I have markdown but honestly sometimes I forget the command to do this or that and it’s faster to just hit a button sometime. As long as the toolbar was able to be disabled for those who want a clean distraction free view I think the community would love it.
Please add a toolbar panel (shown in the screenshot) for formatting text from the mobile version to the desktop version (either at the bottom or top of the page). It shouldn’t be difficult to implement, but for the average user who is not familiar with Markdown markup, it would be very convenient.
It’s just as bad as cMenu. And, in general, why bother inventing something when it’s already natively implemented in the mobile version. Moving it to the desktop version as a separate panel shouldn’t pose any problems. In Obsidian’s settings, add a switch with the option to disable it for those who prefer using hotkeys or simply don’t need the panel. It’s strange that the developers didn’t optimize it for desktop from the very beginning. It seems obvious.
Great idea. It could also partially resolve my problem of having handy set of custom background highlight colors available on the panel. On desktop there are only 5 custom colors available in “Editing Toolbar” plugin, and I couldn’t manage to put highlighting color palette on “Cmenu” plugin panel on PC, and its only available after rightclick on selected text
I was running up against this same wall we were all dealing with (built-in toolbar is meh, cMenu/editing-toolbar is also meh, etc.) and couldn’t help but make my own even though, yes, it was incredibly difficult. I hope you like it!
It would be awesome if Obsidian added a toolbar, similar to what we have on mobile, to allow for another way to edit and format text. Markdown is extremely powerful and the command pallet is useful but being able to have a toolbar is also useful. I know there are community plugins that add toolbar functionality but having a first party option would be nice, especially for someone like me who uses only vanilla Obsidian for simplicity and privacy/security.
Proposed solution
Obsidian should add the same toolbar that is on mobile to the desktop application. Hopefully having it on mobile will make this an easier lift.
Current workaround (optional)
Use community plugins (which I am not willing to do right now)
