TaskForge: The Native Task Manager for Obsidian Users

Hey Obsidian Users!

I’ve been working on TaskForge, a native task management app specifically designed for Obsidian users, and I’m excited to share that it’s now available for testing on iOS and macOS!

:fire: What makes TaskForge special?

  • Native Obsidian Tasks Integration: TaskForge works directly with your Obsidian vault’s tasks, faithfully replicating the functionality of the popular Tasks plugin with full support for all date types, recurring tasks, priority emoji, and more!

  • Everything Stays Local: Your vault data remains exclusively on your devices - no external servers involved. iCloud is only used to sync your app settings and custom lists between devices, ensuring your personal information remains under your control.

  • Fully Customizable Experience: Create custom filtered task lists that show exactly what you need (tasks due today, tasks with specific tags, high priority items, etc). Light/dark mode, compact view options, and more to fit your workflow perfectly.

  • Rich Notification System: Get reminded about due and upcoming tasks with configurable notification times. The app also displays badges showing the number of tasks needing attention.

  • Beautiful Markdown Support: All your fancy formatting and links display beautifully in the UI - just as you’d expect from an Obsidian companion app.

:brain: Why I built this

I wanted a seamless way to manage my Obsidian tasks across devices without compromising on privacy or functionality. After looking at existing solutions, I decided to build something that works exactly how an Obsidian user would expect - with your tasks stored in plain markdown, accessible anywhere, and displayed in a native interface optimized for task management.

:rocket: Ready to try it out?

Join the beta via TestFlight and help shape the future of TaskForge with your feedback!

I’d love to hear what you think - feature requests, bug reports, or just general feedback are all greatly appreciated.

Let me know what you’d like to see next in TaskForge!

PS I noticed another awesome Obsidian task app was posted earlier today! Great minds think alike :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: There’s definitely room for different approaches to task management in the Obsidian ecosystem. If you’re using iOS, check out both and see which fits your workflow best! For macOS users… I’ve got you covered!

The forum isn’t letting me post links for some reason, but you can join the TestFlight for both iOS and MacOS here: https://testflight.apple.com/join/ZjUzbSsJ

TLDR; Lots of new features and improvements to the app. Join the beta if you haven’t already!

I shared last week that I’ve been working on building a iOS/macOS native task manager app for Obsidian users. I’ve appreciated all the feedback so far and am excited to share a large update to the development build.

:sparkles: Key changes

Better Obsidian Integration: Improved prompts and warnings when syncing with Obsidian, making the process clearer. Added easier ways to jump directly into Obsidian from TaskForge.

Revamped Settings: The settings screen has been reorganized into clearer sections (Vault, Appearance, Tasks) for easier navigation. You can now also find a contact email and reset any warnings you’ve dismissed.

Smarter Task Management: You can now set default tags that are automatically added to new tasks or tasks in specific custom lists. Custom lists can now be sorted by multiple criteria (e.g., by priority then due date). Task titles are kept cleaner by automatically removing comments.

iOS Enhancements: Improved app startup speed, automatic capitalization for new task titles, and more reliable file syncing for Vaults across different devices.

Deeplinking Support: Added the ability to create links that open directly to specific screens or tasks within TaskForge (useful for integrating with other apps or workflows).

:rocket: What’s next

I’m looking to release the full version of the app on the iOS and Mac App Stores hopefully next week.

For the future, the things on my radar are:

  • Widget support
  • Task notifications at specific times
  • Natural language processing to interpret dates for tasks
  • More options for users to customize the app’s appearance, e.g. custom colouring for tasks based on tags, dates, priorities, etc.

Android support is something I’m thinking about as well, if that’s something you’re interested in please drop a comment below so I can scope out if it’s worth putting in the time.

Hopefully TaskForge starts or continues to help you better manage tasks in Obsidian. Please share any and all feedback, always looking for things to make the app more useful!

Congrats on the continuing progress! Please keep the updates in this thread. Thank you!

Hey Obsidian users!

Super excited to share that TaskForge, the all-in-one Obsidian task manager app for iOS and MacOS, has officially been released!

I appreciate all the folks that have previously participated in the Testflight betas for the app. The Testflight version will be deprecatd in the next few days but the new version has some brand new features to supercharge your experience - more details below!

For anyone who isn’t familiar with the app, the key features and differentiators include:

  • Connect directly to your Obsidian vault to manage tasks within all of your notes
  • Custom lists to manage tasks however you want including lists fitlered by tags, due dates, start/scheduled dates, priorities, and robust sorting options
  • NEW - Set default tags and default due dates for tasks created from your custom lists. Have a Today list? You can easily set any task created in that list to default to being due today
  • Quickly find your tasks with comprehensive search and multi-condition filtering
  • Create and edit tasks using familiar Markdown syntax including hyperlinks, bolding, code blocks, etc. in tasks
  • Get reminders for tasks based on due dates tagged to yourtasks and never miss a deadline. Includes support for custom notification times.
  • NEW - Set “due at” times for tasks with due dates to get notified about them at specific times
  • NEW - iOS widget support allows you to display tasks from any of your custom lists in a widget including the ability to mark these tasks as completed
  • Cross-Platform sync to keep your app settings synced between your iOS device and MacOS device using iCloud
  • 0 tracking and all processing on-device! TaskForge doesn’t send any analytics and sends no data, all taks data propagation will be handled by your selected Obsidian sync service
  • Customizable appearance including support for light mode, dark mode, and compact or comfortable task views

I want to take a second to comment on app pricing as this was something that I wrestled with for some time. The app itself is and always will be completely free but I’ve elected to put some of the features behind a one-time app purchase to support development costs. The app will never move to a subscription model and purchasing the premium option will give you access to all premium features for life.

Hope the app provides as much value to all of you as it has for me so far and I’m always open to hearing about bugs or feature requests. Reach me here on Reddit or at [email protected].

Happy tasking!

PS. I’m still trying to gauge if there’s enough interest for an Android version, please reply below if you’d be interested!

Hey Obsidian users,

Two weeks ago I shared about the launch of my app TaskForge, the all-in-one Obsidian task manager app for iOS and MacOS, and got a great response from the community including some feedback for feature requests.

I wanted to share some large updates to the app in the latest release and that Android release is coming soon!

If you’re only here for Android news, sign up here to be informed when the app releases. I’m also looking for a handful of beta testers so if you’re interested in that, comment below and I’ll reach out to a few folks once the beta is ready which will hopefully be in in the next few days.

In terms of new features for the app, here are the highlights:

  • Accent Color Customization: Choose your favorite accent color for a personalized touch.
  • Sort & Filter by File Path: Easily organize tasks based on where they’re saved in your vault.
  • File Path for Tasks: Set a file path when creating tasks or a default file for new tasks in each custom list.
  • 24H Time Support: Option to display due times in 24-hour format.
  • Custom List Task Previews: See how your custom lists will look with filters and sorting before saving.
  • Smarter Background Sync: Keeps your tasks fresh without you lifting a finger.
  • Unified Search Filters: Custom list filters now work in search too.

As always, open to more feature requests or bug reports. Reach me here on Reddit or at [email protected].

Happy tasking!

I’m interested in beta testing the Android version.

I am also interested in beta testing the android version. Thanks!

Im interested in testing the ios app

This is brilliant I’d love to test it on ios

Amazing!

Super interested in this and would love to test the Android app!

:folded_hands:

I like this plugin! It really solves a pain point I’ve had with Obsidian (no quick way to add tasks and no easy, organized way to view tasks)!

Also, do you plan on open sourcing this app @TaskForgeDev?
