SOLVED: Obsidian Sync / Login Outage Down

Obsidian system status can be found at:
https://status.obsidian.md/

Hello!

We are aware that Obsidian Online account access and Sync is down. We are working on it.
We apologize for the inconvenience!

UPDATE: 2024-08-24 8:10 AM EST
There was a problem with the account/credential server with our hosting provider. The server is back online now. Sync and all the other services should start working again. We will investigate with our hosting provider what happened.

POST-MORTEM: 2024-08-24 9:00 AM EST
Our main server was taken down by a forced reboot at 2024-08-24 3AM EST / 12AM PST. When the account server was down, our services like Sync, Publish, and account functions like login or sign up were disrupted.

Normally our services would have immediately auto-restarted, however we made a mistake in the auto-restart configuration, which meant that it did not automatically restart. I was able to start it up again manually at 8AM EST. Everything is back to normal now.

I have since located the configuration issue and fixed it so if this happens again it would be down for at most a few seconds. Apologies for the inconvenience!

Got such an error in the console:

Same here on Windows 11. Cannot connect to sync.

What I’m trying to do

Sync my vaults between devices, log into my user account on obsidian.md

Things I have tried

Sync doesn’t work on any device, message: “Can’t connect to remote vault”. Managing vaults doesn’t work either, same message.

Wanted to log into my account on obsidian.md, “Something went wrong, please try again later.”

Topics searched for

Sync problem – no problem of similar kind found.

Hi,

Same problem for me

Kind regards

Yeh, same – appears they are having major server issues.

The ice stone has melted! Cats and dogs are living together! Everybody panic!

Same. Can’t even log in to my account.

  • Any ETA on fix?
  • Would be nice to see some communication around this

me too

same here

Same here. No sync, no vault discovery, even logging out fails

I can’t even log out. Which sounds crazy.

The same. Sync doesn’t work and I can’t even log in to my account…

Also getting the issue. On Android I’ve cleared cache, tried a logout but now can’t log back in and also deactivated any firewalls but issue persists

Same problem here.
Sent an request to support.

Another one. After trying to uninstall Obsidian, I cannot even set up the app any longer…

Which they will probably ignore just like mine

The team have been notified.

That is all we got, that is what paid customers deserve these days after an outage in it’s 3rd hour :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I assume the Obsidian team operates out of North America, according to their bios. I can understand that an outage in the middle of the night and on a weekend for a small team like that is somewhat tough to handle.

That said, I do hope that they are slowly getting their workstations fired up as they are probably getting boarded by alerts right now while in their PJs… Looking forward to some updates as we move into more “natural” work hours for the Americas!

Which is fine for a:

  • free service
  • a reasonably priced service

But when you charge $4 for 1GB storage (Obsidian Sync) which is more than what Google asks for 200GB (https://one.google.com/about/plans → GBP2.49 works out to be $3,29), so you basically ask for $800 for the same amount…that is hardly reasonable. And yet, I am pretty sure if Google Drive goes offline I do not have to troll around forums for an update in 3h

(And before you ask “so why not use Google Drive for sync then?”- because with Linux and Windows I can possibly slap the Obsidian folder in it and call it a day, but sadly as far as I know iPhone does not support this - unsure about Android)
