Does the team read feature requests?

We do read and keep track of feature requests, especially the popular ones. While the team does not respond to each feature request, know that every one is read and considered, informing the direction and design of the app in the long-term.

Why is this feature not on the roadmap?

The roadmap only reflects the larger projects on the immediate horizon but its not all-encompassing.

Will this feature be considered in the future?

Deciding what to do next is one of the hardest problems developers have to address. Note that there are thousands of feature requests, each as valid for at least one user as the last. So, we take a fuzzy approach to prioritizing requested features. We consider popularity, of course, but there are also other critical factors, including:

  1. Balancing trade-offs. Some feature requests might solve a key problem for one group of users only to create new problems for other groups. Designing these changes takes careful consideration, consultation, development, and prototyping.
  2. Introducing complexity. Some feature requests may seem simple on the surface yet implementing them requires a cascade of underlying changes to the UX and foundations of the app.
  3. Serendipity and opportunity. The team is always busy reflecting on the state of the app, the ecosystem, and the broader world of note-taking and knowledge management. Seemingly less-popular feature requests may suddenly become easy to implement because of a change to a framework or a new API that Obsidian can leverage. Similarly, popular feature requests may depend on these external frameworks and APIs that the team has no control over. Finally, sometimes new opportunities come along that no one has anticipated — remember the cliche that if you’d asked people what they’d wanted before the invention of the car, they might have said “faster horses.”
