Usable space reduced with iPadOS 26

When using Obsidian on iPadOS in landscape mode specifically, the usable space on the screen shrinks to half the available space. It works correctly for portrait mode, using the whole screen.

I noticed the bug start appearing with iOS 26 beta 5.

Steps to reproduce

It’s intermittent - forcing the app to quit and restarting it seems to resolve it for a while, but it ultimately drops back to only using half the window.

Did you follow the troubleshooting guide? [Y/N]

Yes, the same result happened eventually.

Expected result

The app continues to use the full width of the device

Actual result

The editor section of the window appears to use only the left half of the screen, screenshot attached

This happens to me in portrait mode too.

A simpler workaround is to tap into the editing area. Rotating the screen fixes it too.

I wouldn’t expect this issue to be addressed by Obsidian unless it persists into the non-beta release of the operating system.

Please, send the bug report to Apple.

I noticed this also. Note that my workaround when this happens is to:

  1. Switch to “MultiTasking > Windowed Apps”
  2. Resize the window (smaller)
  3. Maximize the window

This fixes it, temporarily.

let me us know if this is still present in Obsidian v1.9.x (even though we havent made any changes)

Yes, I’m afraid it’s still present in Obsidian 1.9.10. I’ve found a quick way to reproduce the issue is to use cmd-tab to switch to another app and then back. And as @CawlinTeffid mentioned, rotating the screen and then back does temporarily fix it - when it rotates back, the view uses the entire width of the window.

@WhiteNoise I’d be happy to report this to Apple as well, but I’ve don’t know enough about what’s happening to do so. What would you suggest sending - the same as the report I originally filed, or something else?

If just having a feedback reported for them is sufficient, I’d be happy to do that and provide the feedback number so that your team could reference it.

Alas, after an iPadOS update (or maybe the Obsidian one but I think iPadOS) tapping in the editing area no longer fixes it.

I’m seeing this problem, too. However, I see it across several apps: Firefox and Windy being the standouts.

In both Obsidian and Windy, side bars render correctly on the right side of the screen. Only the content is constricted in the left half of the screen.

Just, provide the feedback to them. We don’t need the feedback number.

I’m finding this is resolved in beta 6. Anyone else?

I’ve lost track of which beta I’m on (it’s 23A5336a and there’s no update available, so I guess it’s 6?), but I’m still having the problem.

iPadOS 26.0 (23A340)—I think this is the release candidate

The problem persists for me. The app initially opens just fine. It’s only after restoring to it after using another app does the right half of the screen become unusable.

I still see a similar problem in both Windy and iPadOS Firefox. In these apps it manifests a bit differently. In Windy, some navigation controls and the current condition bars become confined to the left half of the screen when restored. In Firefox, elements with CSS “box-sizing: border-box;” go half sized when restored to the screen—maybe related, maybe not.

Really hoping to see a solution to this soon as it seriously degrades the usability of Obsidian on the iPad.

Please, send the feedback to Apple. We did.

Finally sent my feedback. :crossed_fingers:

The bug made it into the public release of iPadOS 26. :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

Changed title to reflect it’s no longer (just) the beta and not just landscape (was: “Usable space reduced with iPadOS 26 beta 5 in landscape mode”).

Sorry to add yet another reply! I seem to have found a workaround: Stage Manager.

I’ve been using single window mode and only enabling multi window when needed because it makes it too easy to accidentally exit full screen. But a brief look at Stage Manager unexpectedly cured the problem (it returns when I switch back to single window mode). I’m leaving it on for now because the sweet relief from the bug outweighs the slight weirdness and risk of window resizing.

Just adding to the chorus here, same symptoms & fix as above.

I’ve managed to find another work around that just uses shoving apps to the side and back. I’ve got a screen capture video on youtube that demonstrates it. However, I’m blocked from posting the video here and I cannot even give a link to the video.

Maybe you can find it with a search, the video is titled “Obsidian HalfScreen/FullScreen work around.” on my youtube account @KLarsLohn

we are considering making a release to work around this Apple bug.
