Sync deleting files inappropriately

I’m trying Sync again after a gap of a year, but am not filled with confidence as to it’s robustness or how well this has been thought through.

Steps to reproduce:

  • I had a fully synchronised vault on desktop, including all file types apart from images
  • I then added an android sync but did not change any of the defaults, so it was to synchronise only images and not other attachments.
  • It synched perfectly well.
  • I then changed the sync settings on the phone to include all file types, media pdf files etc.
  • I got this in the log (Log 1 on mobile below)
  • A half a day later I opened obsidian on the desktop and got this (log 2 below)
  • All media files wiped as having been deleted on mobile - Holy Smoke!
  • I will add that one possible factor (not 100% clear - but does not make it any less of a bug) in reproduction is that the phone memory was quite full. It is possible that if the phone tries to do a download and that download fails (they are not shown as failed, simply as “skipped”) it marks the file as having been deleted on the server. If that is the cause it would be even more problematical.

On further examination of disk backups before and after these events the above is exactly what happened. There are several different bugs involved here.

  • Sync of other file types was switched on - on the mobile
  • The phone ran out of space in the MIDDLE of the first attachment download.
  • This yielded a partial file for that attachment which was downloaded - the first half of the binary of a pdf (Bug 1: Downloads should be complete or not at all)
  • All other files are noted in log as “skipped” - (Bug 2: Running out of space is not a “skipped” - that is an inappropriate log entry, which is not even marked as an error at all)
  • Deletion of every file was then transmitted back to the server, and the partial (corrupted) one file was also transmitted back (Bug 3)
  • Obviously all the files were then wiped on other devices, and the corrupted half file also sent
  • Absolutely no error messages in the log on either side as part of any of this.

I am not as certain as you are on the reconstruction of events.

Are you sure that Log 1 is from moto g(8), it looks like it comes from another device.

Here [moto g(8)] is the device who did the action originally (deleted or renamed).
In normal circumstances, it is impossible for [moto g(8)] to originate the delete and be on the receiving end of the same action.

There are 2 explanations:

  1. The simple explanation: That sync log is not from [moto g(8)]
  2. The exceptional explanation: You have two local copies of the same vault on [moto g(8)] and both are connected to the same remote vault on sync. The note was deleted on one of the local copies, then you switched to the other local copy and received the deletion there.

I’m experiencing sync deletion issues as well, in this context:

  • I have a .cycler DSL and an Obsidian plugin that generates UI for it
    • there are .md files which activate the UI via a MarkdownPostProcessor
    • the .cycler files have data persistence via vault.adapter.write, based on myAPI.save events that occur in the UI. these events occur infrequently, several times a day at most and are typically spaced out by at least several minutes/hours.
    • no deletion events occur from within my plugin, and no file operations are performed to dynamic groupings of files at any time - only a single targeted file is updated at a time.
  • My vault is under Git version control as a safety net for Sync. This repo is managed exclusively from my desktop and only pushes to remote - pull is never used.

The deletion seems to be triggered primarily when using Sync. I can use my Cycler plugin without issue if I stick to a particular device, but when I load Obsidian on another device there is a sporadic chance that my files will get deleted. Sometimes it’s a single file, sometimes it’s an entire folder.

I’m not sure if the plugin or usage of the vault API has anything to do with the deletion issue, just figured I’d include these details in case they happen to be relevant.

If this happens only with your plugin, open a thread in developers and API.

If it happens with your plugin disabled, attach the sync logs of all devices involved when the issue happens.
