Be in version 1.8.3 of Obsidian (for broken behaviour) or version <1.7.7 (for intended behaviour)
Be in a note editor with your cursor on an empty line
Press Shift+Enter
Expected result
A newline to be created, while the cursor remains in the same location.
Actual result
The newline is created, but the cursor moves with it - essentially performing the same action as having simply pressed Enter

Update installer: installer version too low, please download from Download - Obsidian and reinstall.
Additionally, I have tested this out on an older version of Obsidian that I have not updated on my laptop, where the intended behaviour still exists;

For what it’s worth, I appear to be having the reverse of this post;
I want this behaviour to exist, and when upgrading from 1.7.7 to 1.8.3
I have been able to test this out in the current version, as well as the older version, both of which were in new sandbox vaults, with no community plugins.
I can repro on MBP + Sequoia 15.2 + Sandbox Vault : Hitting Shift + Enter or Enter bears the same result: a newline is created and the cursor is moved along.
I couldn’t repro with Obsidian 1.7.7 + Installer 1.7.7 but I can repro with Obsidian 1.8.3 + Installer 1.7.7.

I use the Obsidian Outliner plug-in extensively.
Shift-enter normally generates a new, unbulleted line at the indent level of the note above. Now, however, shift-enter simply generates a new unindented unbulleted line. This is a bummer. How can I rectify this?
Things I have tried
I’ve toggled fetures in the plug-in, searched guidance from the Git Hub site, enteres a note suppoting a months-old bug report on the same issue there, and updated everything.
Mac OS 15.3
Minimal Theme 7.7.18
Obsidian 1.8.4
Thanks in advance for your support in getting me back to expected behavior and efficient workflow.
Pentbot regarding the problem in this thread. What you described “happened” to work that way due to a bug that was fixed 1.8.4. In fact, if you go in console you will see that hitting shift-enter produces and error in 1.7.7 sometimes.
We consider the current behavior correct. If you want shift-enter, to create a new line without moving the cursor, you are going to need to open a FR or search for a plugin that implements this feature.
jimmeredith, you are describing a different problem that was likely fixed with 1.8.5.
Well bummer - guess I’ll see if there is a plugin that comes up which impliments this behaviour.
Well, I guess I’ll be wandering over to Feature Request section to add in a new keybind or something, as well as scouting the plugins for a replacement.
Thankfully there is a plugin someone made called Insert New Line that works for this! Can map Shift+Enter to Insert New Line: Above and all is right in the world again
