I started using it mainly from version 1.5. Both the 1.6 and 1.7 series have slower startup speeds.
The mobile version is still less convenient for organization and management compared to the desktop version. So, the reasons for using it are essentially two-fold:
just reading
Quick note-taking.
For quick note-taking, startup speed is extremely important. That’s why I’ve been sticking with the 1.5 series and not upgrading.
I upgraded to 1.6 and 1.7, but downgraded back again.
The slow startup speed of 1.6 and 1.7, makes me hesitate when taking notes on the go, wondering whether to use the built-in notes or to open Obsidian.
It’s not the same, can having it reside in the background be considered a solution?
I only have four plugins enabled. And I’m not asking for it to be very fast, at least the 1.7 and 1.6 series are getting slower and slower, far inferior to 1.5.
I don’t dare to expect it to be very fast, but can it not get slower with each upgrade?
You’re absolutely right. I chose to upgrade because the latest version claimed to have improved the startup speed on mobile devices, but after upgrading, I found it to be even slower. I had no choice but to revert back to version 1.5.
I enjoy considerably faster loading times on my iPad than ever before.
@lysps Startup time depends on volume of vault and number of plugins. To tackle the second, you can try installing AlanG’s Lazy Plugins plugin. The plugins will still need to be loaded when you enter the app but the startup time will be reduced.
Apparently, though, the latest version of the plugin needs Obs. ver. 1.6 minimum though. So you either update Obsidian or try going back to a plugin version that accepts Obs. 1.5. (Or could try editing the manifest file or use another type of plugin loader.
Try again to install version 1.7.x, then go to Obsidians settings>general>advanced and click on the timer icon. You’ll see more in detail what makes your Obsidian so slow, try. Take a screenshot of this startup log, could be helpful for us to help you.
From my experience, outdated CSS code or plugins can cause all kind of errors. Did you update your plugins and check how old the latest update of your plugins are? Did you check Obsidians startup speed on a new, empty vault too?
In my experience, Obsidian 1.7.4 is much faster and as a bonus, doesn’t reload anymore that often
If any Apple users need a quick-capture feature now, they can create Apple Shortcuts to write to Obsidian on any Apple device without Obsidian needing to be open. I have shortcut widgets on the lock screen and home screen of my iPhone, meaning that with the lock-screen widget I don’t even need to unlock the iPhone to be able to type or dictate a note into Obsidian. I have similar shortcuts on the menu bar and dock of my Mac, again giving me the option to capture notes in Obsidian without Obsidian running.
Oh, I didn’t look closely. The startup time displayed here is only three seconds, but in reality, it’s far more than that. The startup time of the 1.7 series is more than double that of the 1.5 series.
I use the 1.5 series, which can barely replace the note-taking app that comes with the phone. However, the 1.7 is too slow for mobile use; it’s only suitable for organizing and recording lengthy texts. Therefore, as a mobile app, I think the 1.7 series is somewhat unqualified. Of course, if it runs in the background, there would indeed be no issues.
I’ve tried it, and even without any plugins, version 1.7.5 is still slow.
Except for blank vault, I haven’t tried anything else, and everything else is faster with the 1.5 series.
I’ve even tried turning off core plugins, and there’s still no way to surpass the 1.5 series; the difference is significant, to the point of being a multiple.
Moreover, you don’t need to ask me to test it; why don’t you try it for yourselves?
Such a glaring difference—why can you turn a blind eye to it? I understand that sometimes, due to the positioning and inclination of a product, some features will inevitably be sacrificed.
Startup speed is indeed a concern for me or perhaps a small group of people. We can only request it.
However, the fact that the performance of the 1.7 series is far inferior to the 1.5 series is quite evident.
I hope you experts can recognize this.
If you experts genuinely were not aware of this situation before, I hope you can understand it and then work on improving this issue.
That would be a blessing for us users.
Thank you all.

Thank you the Lazy Plugins plugin did all the difference for Obsidian on my old phone! It took startup times from around a minute (!) to around 10 seconds. I was in the thoughts of maybe having to migrate my to do system to something that was more responsive. Thank you, thank you!
No matter what, I’m comparing version 1.5 with 1.7.
It’s not just about the startup time. I’ve noticed that Obsidian’s startup speed is deteriorating.
I don’t dare to ask you experts to spend too much effort, but I hope you can pay a little attention. If Obsidian could return to the speed of the 1.5 series, that would be the best. The difference is really noticeable…
The Templater plugin can also achieve delayed startup, and combined with the startup speed of the 1.5 series, it can launch Obsidian in 2 to 3 seconds. For the 1.7 series, I feel it would take more than double the time.
