Open multiple files / tabs

Hi,

I’m relatively new to obsidian and there is much about it that I had always missed and wished for in similar apps. There is one thing that I just don’t understand why it is missing:

The ability to open more than one file at once.

I can’t find an option in the settings to activate this. Being able to have multiple files open at once and being able to cycle through them with ctrl+tab is to my understanding an absolute basic feature. without it I’m constantly working my way through the file tree on the right in order to switch between files. I don’t get why such a basic feature is missing. Or have I just missed the option in the settings?
