How do I close the search pane?

I’m probably missing something really simple, but how do I close the search box in the right upper corner?

I’ve tried command keys, searched the web,…

You appear to have dragged the search facility into its own space. If you grab the magnifying-glass icon and drag-and-drop it on to the row of icons below (house, star, clock, tray), it should ‘close’ and become part of that group again.

It can be fiddly to do. Jumps around a lot. But it should work.
