Horizontal Rule Broken?

When I try to create a horizontal rule with 3 dashes, it doesn’t create a line in preview mode. If I create it with 3 underlines, it works. Aren’t both valid markdown syntax?

Ahh, that’s it, iOS is turning two dashes into an em dash. It is the iOS feature of smart punctuation turning two dashes into an em dash. When I turn off smart punctation it works fine.
