Like many others, I use an iPhone and the default image format is HEIC rather than jpg. I think it would be very valuable to have support for embedding HEIC files. As things currently sit, obsidian doesn’t even recognize the files when navigating to their location in the foder view, they don’t even show up.
I agree that Obsidian should support heif format.
Would love HEIC support.
it’s not supported by chrome
There’s a pure HTML5 implementation of HEIC which might be of use.
Until this isn’t build into chrome and safari, it won’t happen.
Has heic file support been added yet to Obsidian on the Mac and/or iPhone apps? I’m not using Chrome.
Not yet. I believe the issue is that Obsidian uses Electron which uses Chromium which comes from Chrome, and Chrome likely won’t add HEIC support for political reasons, not technical reasons (Chrome comes from Google, HEIC is primarily used by Apple).
it’s not just political reasons. HEIC is not a royalty-free format.
There’s some hope that big companies will agree on the next format: AVIF.
Would be really nice if Obsidian used the macOS Webkit on Apple’s platforms, that way support for HEIF would be free and included. I don’t get why it has to be Chrome.
Would be really nice if I can preview HEIC pictures in a note!
That is the only thing that is missing for my journaling workflow in Obsidian
We need Support HEIC
Yes, would love to see support for HEIC images, too!
OR
A quick conversion from HEIC to JPG if dragging and dropping/pasting an HEIC image into a note.
not true, my samsung phone make photo in HEIC. So it’s no longer an issue related to iPhone users only
I’m converting my entire visual collection to .avif
