Full File System Access For The iOS App (Open Existing Vault/Folder)

totally needed. I have been looking for a way to open my documents folder on iCloud as the vault. That way I can work as I would on the Mac. It works on the Mac though, but no synchronization :frowning:

Like many others here, I am not allowed to store my work notes anywhere else than on OneDrive for Business (which the remote save plugin does not support, it only support personal accounts).

Would really like to see this implemented (and better iOS support all around). It prevents me from using Obsidian on my iPad at all, as even paying for Obsidian Sync doesn’t offer sufficient flexibility for my use case and needs (I’ve since cancelled my subscription).

I can’t tell you how much I would like to see this implemented. I work across 3 environments–Windows, iOS, and Ubuntu, and Dropbox has provided a consistent and smooth experience across all 3. I really like Obsidian, but cross-platform integration is much more problematic than I was led to believe in the beginning. Here’s what I’ve tried:

  • Keep everything in Dropbox: Can’t take notes using my ipad.
  • Obsidian Sync: Randomly would not update a lot of files.
  • Remotely Save: Couldn’t get it to work.
  • iCloud: iCloud for windows is really buggy, and keeps creating duplicates or failing to upload/download needed files. I migrated some files over from dropbox, and lost access to them because they were local on one computer, and even after a whole weekend, they hadn’t made the jump to my other devices.

I’m considering migrating back to Foam + iWriter, even though the interface is less pleasing.

Sync only works when Obsidian is open. Were you closing it before it synced the files? (This is mainly an issue on mobile where apps are frozen when not active.)

You could do Dropbox Obsidian on desktop and iWriter (or some other Markdown app) on iOS. Dropbox finally integrated fully with Files, so it can be bookmarked and treated as local by other apps (not Obsidian, unfortunately, but maybe someday).

I think as well, Obsidian needs to improve here! Otherwise it wont be successfull in the longterm. Remotely Save ist the only ok way. And as was said above, if the App 1Writer is able to do this, Obsidian should be too.
Even more, because it does not offer a browser interface.

Does anybody have experience, how well Obsidian works with remotely Save Pro and Cloud Provider pCloud or even found a better solution than remotely save for this?

Hello,
now, as you can select an all to Save Data to on iOS (for Preview for example you can select a place with “Document Storage” in the settings app) is syncing with another app/cloud possible?
Or is this feature only for singular documents?

Related, more limited request (for Dropbox only, which finally implemented full support for iOS’s Files API last year):

I think I also want this feature. I have a vault synced with git and I use a Git app on iOS (and iPadOS) called Source Files to have it available on the filesystem of iOS. But I can’t find any way to point obsidian to this directory and use it as a vault.

+1 Obsidian on iPhone SHOULD be able to open vaults stored on a MagSafe SSD. There is no reason it can’t do it.

+1 Obsidian on iphone should propose to open vaults stored on any SSD device connected to the phone. I would love to keep my data on 2 SSDs mirrored manually (old school way) than hoping cloud and encryption will protect them :sob:

I would really appreciate if I could store the data in a folder I could choose. I wonder if someone found a viable workaround in the meantime?

This is a must for me. I am needing to sync from my iPhone to my computer and my current intended method would be to access them on a shared folder from my NAS. I always have connection to it, and I just need to be able to change the folder that the application is looking for obsidian files. Without this I am unable to have notes between my devices.

Since I do not want to publish personal data (even if E2E encrypted) on a cloud based solution. I tried to synchronize by means of iCloud. Result: different versions, no real time synchronization. Thus I tried to setup a self hosted live sync with couchdb - which does not work with a self signed certificate. I gave up. After several evenings without any feasible solution, I tried to setup a self hosted anytype sync. It took me two evenings and it works! So finally I switch to anytype now.

Upvote, that feature allow us to have freedom of choosing where our vault should live.

+1, especially now that this is possible for Dropbox on iOS
