Vaults in Dropbox on iOS

Use case or problem

Expand the limited sync options on iOS, especially for people who also use Windows (which causes problems with iCloud). In 2024 Dropbox finally implemented full support for iOS’s Files API. If I understand correctly, that means Obsidian could now use it for vault storage. Dropbox’s free tier offers enough space for a standard vault, and many people already have accounts. EDIT: Dropbox’s “keep downloaded” feature, which is needed for Obsidian, requires a paid account.

(While I think many people would find this useful, I use Obsidian Sync in my personal vaults so would probably only use it on odd occasions when I have to do day job work away from home.)

Proposed solution

Allow vaults to be created in Dropbox on iOS. Note during setup (and in docs) that the files need to be kept downloaded, and that that requires a paid Dropbox subscription.

Current workaround (optional)

Using Dropbox:

  • Dropbox with Obsidian on desktop and a different text editor app on iOS
  • Remotely Save or Remotely Secure plugin with Dropbox (or other cloud storage)

Using other sync:

  • Obsidian Sync
  • iCloud (if not paired with Windows or Linux)
  • Self-hosted LiveSync plugin
  • SyncThing
  • Git

Dropbox’s “keep downloaded” feature on iOS requires a paid account, I learned recently. That makes the number of people who would use this smaller, and it would require a heads up in the app and the docs.

+1 as this is the only thing preventing me from switching to Obsidian.
