File "disappears" and won't come back when mounted hard disk disconnects

OS X – editing the same Vault from both the laptop (where it is resident) and a Desktop (where the laptop’s desk was mounted) worked perfectly, until overnight when the laptop dismounted itself.

  1. The files should perhaps have disappeared from the desktop’s editor, or at least been impossible to edit.
  2. Instead, after editing a little, the window closed and an error popped up “file not found, save your edits or risk losing them” [not exact text, sorry, I’m late to work, harass me to build a better replication if needed].
    1. There was no way to save the file as the pane holding it had closed.
  3. There was no way to reopen the file after reconnecting / remounting the host disk. Even editing the file on the (filehost) laptop didn’t stimulate the (file client) desktop to see the “new” (or restore the old) file.

Once you’ve done the above, delete everything above this line.

I’m sorry that I haven’t followed all the steps below; I’m new to Obsidian so it will take some time to know exactly what I should have expected. Any help would be welcome, but do just tell me “not good enough” and ask me to edit this further if necessary.

Additional information

The “environment” info (the output of the show debug info command) for all devices involved is required for bug reports, but it may be related to this:

Obsidian uses local files/folders and needs all open vaults to always be local. If a drive that a vault is in disconnects, it’s ripping the file system out under Obsidian. There will be errors/issues.
