Error 153 when Embedding Youtube Videos

I’ve included a command to simplify the youtube cookies clearing in media extended v4.1.2.

https://mx.pkmer.net/docs/v4/how-to/fix-youtube-error-153

this no longer works, see status update in Error 153 when Embedding Youtube Videos - #40 by aidenlx

Is this error 153 fixed by youtube or is it still happening?

In my case the error still remains. I’ve just installed, enabled the “Media Extended” plugin and cleared the cookies as suggested by @aidenlx. The cookies are cleared, but no luck.

THANK YOU! This worked for me.

For MacOS, to delete cookies and cache for Obisidian:

  • Go to: ~/Library/Application Support/obsidian

Delete these:

  • Cache/
  • GPUCache/
  • Cookies
  • Cookies-journal
  • Local Storage/

Restart Obsidian

Alt: running the following commandline in terminal should accomplish same (disclaimer: use terminal only if you are comfortable and knowledgeable with it; use own risk. I assume no respnsibility. Blah, blah, blah. :slightly_smiling_face:

rm -rf ~/Library/Application\ Support/obsidian/{Cache,GPUCache,Cookies*,Local\ Storage}

I had the same problem.
This solution resolved it!
Thank you.

any solution for windows? i do not use media extended plugin so i do not have the command to clear cookies

I tried all these, no luck, still getting error. Started a few days ago, all previously working embeds stopped working overnight.

Forgot to mention, new embeds work in the sandbox vault but not mine

i have tried all of the solutions here, and none of them are working. im new to obsidian so this is my first time trying to embed a video, and its just been the same error.

Just started noticing the 153 error as well. Installed Media Extended to try and clear the cookies but no luck yet.

We will switch to using youtube-nocockie in version 1.10.2. No ETAs.

OK desperate as my Obsidian has my entire video reference library. Hoping the update will fix! None of the other fixes here work. Error 153.

Getting the same error all of a sudden.

Changing the embedded URLs to youtube-nocookie.com works inconsistently… sometimes it renders correctly, but other times it throws a 153 error

I’m on Windows 11. Also having the same issue. I tried directly deleting the cookies file from %appdata%, clear youtube cookies from Obsidian console, added the -nocookie option to the URL and none of them worked for me.

On the flip side, on android the same note with the same video plays as expected, so it’s only a desktop issue for me.

I’ve been having this issue for about a week now; still can’t figure it out.

I keep getting a video unplayable “Error 153” message when trying to embed a YouTube video.

I have lots of youtube embedded videos, help please.

During development of media extended, I did get occasional 153 error during frequent reloads, even though the plugin use nocookie variant of iframe already. I’m not sure if it is related to obsidian, or it’s actually related to upgrades of youtube anti-scraper strategy.

from my experience, run Reload obsidian without saving command to reload obsidian can make iframe with youtube-nocookies.com work again without 153 error.

this no longer work consistently

I believe it’s not related to cookies, I’ve confirmed that it’s due to missing Referrer header in obsidian for certain iframe request, regardless of referrer policy.

I’ve directly inject the following iframe to DOM to bypass html santilizer.

<iframe referrerpolicy="origin-when-cross-origin" allow="autoplay; fullscreen; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; accelerometer; gyroscope" src="https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/LCEmiRjPEtQ"></iframe>

and for 153 error, even if setting referrer policy to “origin” or “origin-when-cross-origin”, referrer is still missing.

In 1.10.2 we have tried to use -nocookie, referrerpolicy="origin-when-cross-origin", and setting an http referrer. To be honest, nothing seems to really work. This is why I haven’t marked this as solved.

Right now, we are not sure what has changed on Youtube side and what they want us to do.
If you search Error 153, you’ll see a lot of projects affected by this. If you have any solid idea, let us know.

I wasn’t having this issue until recently. The links work fine on my android but not my windows 11. Sometimes I’m able to clear the cookies and reload obsidian to sometimes fix it. Sometimes it doesn’t.

It’s tied to Google tightening access for anonymous embeds lately. After debugging with obsidian team, we’ve located a potential issue about YouTube embed config, hopefully the fix in the upcoming insider version could at least mitigate the 153 error.
