Creating or opening a new vault doesn't work

Steps to reproduce

  1. Open Obsidian for the first time
  2. Attempt to click on “Create new vault”
  3. Type in the name of the vault, then click “Browse” to select the folder.
  4. Nothing happens; clicking “Browse” again causes a spinny wheel to appear and then disappear.
  5. Go back, click on “Open folder as vault”
  6. Same behavior: nothing the first time around and a spinny wheel the second.

Expected result

Clicking the browse button (or open folder as vault) launches a system dialog where I can select a folder.

Actual result

Spinny wheel of death and/or nothing happens, leaving me stranded at the intro page.

Environment

  • Operating system: MacOS Catalina (10.15.3)
  • Obsidian version: 0.9.8

Are you from the future?!

(I assume you meant 0.8.9?)

I was just able to create a new vault with no problems or oddities. It’s possible there’s something wrong with 0.8.9 (I’m using a later release still in testing) but you may also want to just try reinstalling Obsidian.

Thanks for the report, could you open the developer console and check if there’s any errors when “nothing happens”?

To check for errors, first open the developer tools by pressing Ctrl-Shift-I on Windows/Linux or Cmd-Opt-I on macOS, and then go to the “Console” tab. If you want to save the error to a log file, you can right click on the error and choose “Save as…”.
