EDIT: Installed Butter Editor GitHub - spreadwell/butter-editor · GitHub via BRAT and so far it’s pretty much nailed the solution. One immediate quibble: I can’t hide the frontmatter properties in the settings but maybe I can do that via CSS. Also it’s not free but seems worth it $16 lifetime for v1.

Thanks for mentioning this plugin. I gave it a try, and I might keep using it.

Edit: I had some complaints about the functionality of the plugin, but they have been resolved in an update.
