Hello Obsidian Team and Community,
First, a huge thanks to the developers for the recent update that fixed the longstanding Problem #153 with embedded YouTube videos in Canvas. It’s a fantastic improvement!
While testing the new fix, I noticed two minor but persistent inconsistencies with YouTube embeds between normal notes and the Canvas. They aren’t critical for my workflow, but could be helpful to resolve for others, especially those who create multimedia notes or share their vaults.
Issue 1: “Video unavailable” in normal notes vs works fine in Canvas
When I embed certain YouTube music/song links in a normal note, they fail to load and only show a “Video unavailable / Watch on YouTube” message. However, when I paste the exact same link into a Canvas, it works perfectly (after the update).
Issue 2: Missing Thumbnail for Specific Videos in Canvas
For some specific videos, the embed works in normal notes and shows a thumbnail. However, in Canvas, the same embed loads without a preview thumbnail, just a blank or gray player area.
Again, these are not breaking issues, but resolving them would create a more consistent and polished experience, especially for users who rely heavily on embedded media for their notes and canvases. Since the team just fixed a core embed issue (#153), I wanted to surface these while the YouTube embed logic is fresh.
Thank you for your time (devs and community) and for the continuous improvements to this amazing tool!
Note: I used two arbitrary public YouTube links to demonstrate these behaviors. I’ve included them below in case others want to test in their own vaults to see if it’s a local issue or a more general bug (Since I couldn’t post full links in the forum, I’ve included just the video ID part after “watch?v=”).
