Windows: opening a canvas with Canvas disabled causes a reopening loop

Steps to reproduce

Observed in my existing vault; these minimum steps have not yet been verified in a clean vault:

  1. On Windows, have a .canvas file in an Obsidian vault, with .canvas files associated with Obsidian.
  2. Disable Settings → Core plugins → Canvas.
  3. Open Graph view, enable the attachments filter, and click the canvas file’s node.

Did you read and follow the Guide ? [No]

No—not all steps have been completed. The guide has been read, but I haven’t repeated this in the Sandbox vault or with community plugins disabled.

Expected result

Obsidian should explain that Canvas is disabled, optionally offering to enable it. It should not repeatedly open itself.

Actual result

Obsidian repeatedly displays “Opened file” notifications for the same canvas file. Closing the application causes it to reopen and continue the loop.

Community plugins: for bugs, please first try updating all your plugins to latest. If still not fixed, please try to make the issue happen in the Sandbox Vault or disable community plugins.

Additional information

Windows associates .canvas files with Obsidian.
Inspection of the installed application suggests that, without a Canvas handler, Obsidian sends the file to the system’s default application—which opens it back in Obsidian, repeating the cycle.
Suggested fix: detect disabled built-in handlers and prevent this fallback from launching Obsidian itself.
