It’s 2026, three years after this thread was created. The question here was how many tags Obsidian could handle in a single vault at most. I have about 400 tags in my vault and I don’t see any slowdown. Has anyone with more tags, say 1000 or 1500 or more, noticed any issues?
You needn’t worry about numbers, but using some AI to search for all tags in order to semantically consolidate them would be a good idea. I struggle with the same thing, actually in one vault. I think all of us struggle with this problem.
I use Notebook Navigator for that vault and try to be mindful how I add tags on demand. There’s no need to add too much variety to a general grouping kind of tag, and for another vault, it would be foolish to have ‘amazing’, ‘fantastic’, etc. be distinct tags. So in other cases, it’s better to use a distinct property, like ‘rating’ and use that.
There is a Tag Wrangler plugin that can also help with reducing the number of tags.
I have several thousand and it works just fine. Search for them is not lightning fast, but it’s not so sluggish to be a pain either.
