What are the differences between various database plugins?

File Class = Database type where various attributes are defined.

File Class is applied to regular files only ie regular files are added to Database which are called here file Classs.

For databases related to files (where each row is a file and the colums are the properties of that file), i use DB Folder. For databases that do not have a dependency on files i use Dataloom.

DB Folder requires that each entry created is linked to a file. Sometimes i just want to create a database with contents and i dont want each row to be a link to a file. For this i use Dataloom as it does not force the entry to be linked to a note/file.

Are you able to get the DB Folder database refresh automatically if a note is updated?

I have the refresh option enabled but if a file is renamed for example, the database does not refresh. I have to reload the whole db for the changes to be visible.

Thanks for the spreadsheet @imed I had no idea there were so many DB plugins now. I’ve been using Obsidian for 3 years+, and didn’t keep up!

yeah lot of effort in this sense, keep in mind sets and datacore will be updated with new features and i’ll also compare them with the upcoming dynamic view core plugin

# The Datastore

The database for Datacore is colluquially called the "datastore"; it is an in-memory inverted index over
all of the files in your Obsidian vault. It tracks every single block, section, link, tag, and piece
of frontmatter in every file, and supports quick searches for any of this kind of metadata. Specifically, the following kind of searches are fast:

- **Specific Pages**: Datacore supports looking up metadata for specific files instantly.
- **Specific Types**: Datacore can find all objects of a specific type - like all "pages", all pdf files, all images, all sections, etc.
- **Specific Links and Tags**: Datacore tracks every exact location that any link or tag has been referenced, and can produce their usages quickly.
- **Pages Containing Specific Fields**: Datacore knows where every definition of every field exists,
so it can instantly return pages which contain a key like "status" or "last read".
- **Some Specific Metadata**: Datacore optimizes a few specific fields, like task `completed`, to be
very fast.
- **Parent/Child Relationships**: Given a page, you can instantly load all of it's sections; or given a section, you can instantly load it's parent page.

Datacore can execute arbitrary queries outside of this, but writing your queries on these "fast" queries
will ensure smoother performance.
