Web Clipper not working on Ubuntu

Hello everyone!

I have been trying to make the web clipper work on linux (ubuntu 24) but with no avail.

I tried both firefox and chrome, with both the snap and appimage of Obsidian (latest version).

When I press “add to obsidian” inside the web clipper nothing happens.

There is a dialog box in the browser, but even if i select the obsidian desktop file there is no result at all:

Any idea?

Thanks a lot!

I know nothing about Linux, so this might be completely useless for you, but have you tried the Linux-specific troubleshooting tips on the help site?

Yes, I have tried what is suggested in the troubleshooting section, but with no results. When I click on Open Link (firefox) nothing happens. (With Chrome it doesn’t work either).

Is there anyone who has managed to use the web clipper with linux?

Thanks!

Hi.

There are solved and unsolved Linux issues on Clipper’s GitHub pages. Perhaps a post on GitHub will get a better response?

Better if you guys install the browser plugin Markdownload by deathau. It just works.

Thanks! I had a look there. It seems there are other users with a similar problem…
Sometimes linux can be quite hard to configure.

Maybe I’ll open a ticket there.

In the meantime, thanks @Jopp for the heads up

If there is any linux user in this forum who had a similar problem and wants to share, I’ll be open to suggestions!

I’m currently running Kubuntu 24.04.2 LTS x86_64 under Wayland. I have Obsidian installed using the flatpak version

I had the same issue. I looked at my Obsidian Flatpak settings using Flatseal and noticed I had manually overwritten my settings to use Wayland instead of using the default X11 setting. Once I changed it back, everything worked fine and I’m now able to “Add to Obsidian” correctly using Firefox.

Is you system running Wayland or X11? I wonder if the snap and appimages are getting stopped by Wayland. It might be worth trying the Flatpak version of Obsidian which defaults to X11 sockets. The following picture shows my Flatpak socket settings in Flatseal, which are all default settings. No need for any changes.
