What I’m trying to do
I signed up for sync yesterday so I can use Obsidian on iOS. I’m at my desktop and I want to set it up to sync. Unfortunately, my vault is on Dropbox and Obsidian Sync detects that and won’t sync. That’s fine, I’ll just move my vault. But I can’t do that because my vault is currently open.
How do I close my vault so I can move it so that I can sync?
Things I have tried
You don’t need to close your vault.
- Backup first just to be safe! (just general advice, always!) Just make a copy or a zip file somewhere safe. Then you can be confident to move things around and restore things if anything goes wrong in the process.
- Click on your vault name at the bottom of the right sidebar.
- Click “Manage vaults…”
- Beside your vault, there is a “…” Click that to open a little menu.
- Move vault… (and from there you can choose a new location.)
- (Be careful not to move the folder to an iCloud synced folder.)

If you do this through Obsidian, it will know where you moved it. If you move the folder through your OS, you need to add your vault back to the list by browsing for it.
Thank you. When I tried to move my vault, this is where Obsidian said it can’t move an open vault. But, I applied your last sentence and moved via my file system, opened Obsidian and created a new vault, and manually copied my existing contents.
I am now Syncing!! Thank you so much.
