Using a Stylus Pen with Wayland means mouse events get ignored

Steps to reproduce

  1. Click text editor with a stylus pen
  2. Left or Right click anywhere in Obsidian with mouse cursor or touchpad (nothing happens, bug)
  3. Focus another Window and then Obsidian again (now mouse works again)
  4. Click text editor with stylus pen again
  5. Scroll using touchpad, obsidian freezes and needs to be terminated (scrolling with external mouse works fine, so does scrolling with touchpad before a stylus was used)

Expected result

When using a stylus together with a stylus pen together with a mouse or touchpad, both input methods register correctly and obsidian never crashes.
Hovering over text with the cursor shows the ‘Beam’.

Actual result

After using the stylus pen, obsidian does not register mouse and touchpad clicks anymore.
Scrolling sometimes crashes obsidian after a stylus was used.
Hovering over text with the cursor shows the default cursor.

This bug was not present before the last update I did (so it was probably introduced in 1.11.x)
As this bug is hardware related and may be specific to a driver, device or os details, here is everything about my system that may help with identifying the issue

  • PC: IdeaPad Flex 5 14ALC7

I also tested if discord has the same bug, it doesnt. But this doesnt entirely rule out that the issue comes from electron, as discord doesnt use the newest electron versions afaik.

Hi! I am experiencing the same. Obsidian 1.11.5

Also using under wayland on arch. Was super excited to see the update on native wayland support in these january updates.

I’d like to add that after using the stylus (I’m using a huion pen tablet) and the mouse stops registering clicks, I can still use the pen, and continue using hotkeys. It’s just that my click’s on the mouse won’t register until i unfocus/refocus again.

Glad to know I’m not alone. Experiencing the same issue, would be happy to provide any info to help sort this out. I’m on an Asus ROG GZ301ZE running CachyOS, using a MetaPen M3 Pro.

Same here, its really frustrating as I quite like the program. Im on a convertible Notebook and I really like to use excalidraw but this bug is one hell of a problem for productive workflows.

Another bug that could be related is that I can not navigate all the menus using the pen. Its getting on my nerves when I for example want to click an icon in the left ribbon, because I have to put the pen aside and use my finger to make obsidian recognize it.

This seemed to fix it:

env -u WAYLAND_DISPLAY```

I did a bit of research and the problem seems to be the way that electron and wayland interact, so we need to use xwayland which is kind of a compatibility layer if my noob brain got that correctly.

This worked for a quick test, im gonna use it and see if this is a longterm fix.

This is a known limitation of Wayland/Electron/Chrome. The good news is that I have seen a lot of activity upstream about this.

You can do two things:

  1. Use a recent version of obsidian. Must download and reinstall from our website (appimage or snap), we don’t know what third party packages do.
  2. If it’s not solved, you can force obsidian to run in x11/xwayland mode with obsidian --ozone-platform=x11 and try again 1. in few months

I am using the appackage provided on your website as you can see in the screenshot of my last post. It is the newest version (the filename is related to the installer version):

As I already stated, this:

does work for me for now. What is the advantage of your solution?

If that doesn’t work, it means this isn’t yet fixed. Try approach 2.

Is it a difference if I use the older version and let the program update itself? I thought this would be the same as redownloading the image. If I’m wrong with my assumption please tell me, I’m willing to learn :slight_smile:

I just want to know why you think your approach is better than mine, as mine seems to work flawlessly.

I don’t think there’s any difference, you are just messing up the wayland enviroment variable so Obsidian runs in x11 mode.
