After installing the 1.8.4 update, attempting to launch obsidian.exe is met with a brief, blue circle loading icon, and then nothing.
Reinstalling the previous version I was using (1.4.16) works fine, as far as I can tell.
It shows up for a under a second in windows task manager, on the processes tab.
Running as admin brings the same results.
Things I have tried
After googling I’ve tried as many suggestions as I could, even if they didn’t necessarily make sense.
These are all in relation to trying to make 1.8.4 work.
Reinstalling Obsidian.
Moving the .obsidian folder out of my vaults.
Updating Windows.
Installing older versions of obsidian that are a couple releases older.
Attempting to launch with the windows firewall disabled.
Look through vaults for files over 40mb. (There wasn’t a single file even at 1 mb).
If you want 1.8.4 to (fully) work, you’ll also need that installer. Otherwise you’ll get some discrepancy related to stuff like PDF handling, which was updated in the installer (and not only in the main program). Not sure which other there is. At least that is what is recommended.
So I’ll try re-installing Obsidian with matching installer and main version, and turn off the auto-update so as not to get the 1.8.x version. That is, unless there is something in 1.8.x you really want, where it seems you should wait for a newer versions fixing the minor(?) bugs which are present in 1.8.4, and they’re trying to work out as we speak.
(It sounds like you already did try updating your installer and trying other older installers.)
It might be worth finding the app settings folder, making a backup of that folder, and then trying to rename or delete it. I wonder if it’s some cache problem or something.
%APPDATA%\obsidian
Save a backup first to be safe, because deleting that folder might mean you’ll lose some things like File Recovery snapshots. (It also might not help your issue, I’m just guessing.)
