Thinking out loud of a creative way to get to the command pallet - perhaps a two finger double tap and it brings it up for quick access?

Or Quick Open, or perhaps a tabbed view that offers both?

Three finger tap could also be an option.

The new pull down menu in 0.0.16 should be a reasonable solution for this.
