I’m trying to configure a folder for document templates. No matter what I do in the configurations, when I click the Insert Template icon on the left side of the main window, I get the error “Failed to list templates. Folder ‘/Users/[my.username]/Documents/Obsidian/[template.folder.name]’ not found”.
The folder most certainly exists at this path. And to make sure I was using the right path, I drag-and-dropped the folder into the Template folder settings input field, and edited it to show only the file path.
I’m on a Mac.
Things I have tried
I searched Google and this forum for “Obsidian template folder not found”.
I edited the folder path in templates.json in my .obsidian files in the vault I’m using to be the correct file path.
I have checked and double checked the file path in Options > Templates > Template folder location.
I am absolutely sure there are no typos in the file path, and that the folder exists.
In the core plugin, if the field is blank and you place your cursor inside the text box you should see a list of folders? Do you see the folder listed?
Are you using any sync service (Obsidian Sync or external application)?
Have you tried the community plugin Templater? It has more bells and whistles than the core plugin, but you don’t have to use the extra things.
Are you noticing anything else acting strangely in that vault? I wonder if it’s a permission issue i.e., Obsidian can’t read/write to the location for some reason?
Montblanc mentioned a Sync service, but is your Documents folder watched by iCloud Drive/One Drive/etc.? If the files/folders in your vault are placeholders and not actually on the drive, that will give Obsidian problems.
When you have a few minutes, in the Sandbox vault:
Create a templates folder
Set the folder location in the Templates settings
Put a simple template in there and try it
If that’s all fine, do the same in a new test vault not located in your Documents folder. e.g. /Users/YOU/{VAULT-NAME}.
