Template Folder Not Found! (Windows 10)

Hi, completely new to Obsidian. The idea of using templates was cool, but I can’t seem to figure out how to use them. I try to insert a template (after I’d filled in the template folder config) and it keeps saying “Failed to list templates. Folder “” not found.”

Steps I took to reproduce:

  1. Create a new vault; Set name and location in C:\Users<user>\ObsidianFiles
  2. In File Explorer, create folder C:\Users<user>\ObsidianFiles\Templates
  3. Open Settings by clicking cog:

  4. Navigate Templates > Template folder location
  5. Copy full path from (2) into field (have tried with it quoted, with a backslash on the end, replacing the backslashes with two forward slashes, and every combination of those).
  6. Navigate back to vault home screen.
  7. Click “Insert Template”
  8. Get error message: “Failed to list templates. Folder “<folder in (2)>” not found.”

Alternatively, I also tried from [1-4], created a file in the template folder called “test_template.txt” with “{{date}}” being the only content, and continued from there (because maybe it just didn’t find any files in the folder?) but it still resulted in the same error.

Version/System info:

Obsidian Version: v1.8.9

Language: English

Windows Specs:

Edition Windows 10 Pro
Version 22H2
OS build 19045.5608
Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.19061.1000.0

If you’re talking about default Template settings like this …

… there shouldn’t be a path from your drive, but an Obsidian path from your Vault’s root. I guess in your example, only Templates. Just click on it or start typing, and it will suggest you a list of available folders.

Cheers, Marko

EDIT

OK, now I see …

Template folder should be inside your vault.

Hi, welcome

It’s best to do things within Obsidian itself. I’d advise against using the Finder/Windows explorer for now.

Your path is wrong here. Life is Roblox is your vault name, the root, of your vault. Everything for that vault needs to go into that folder. Try this:

  1. Create a Templates folder in the vault.
  2. Set the folder in Settings -> Templates.
  3. Create a new note with {{date}}, etc., and move it into the Templates folder.
  4. You can now apply this template to new or existing notes.

edit: Exactly what DiCaver posted. We must have been typing at the same time. :grinning:

Thank you both DiCaver and ariehen for your help. It makes sense that the config would only consider obsidian-managed folders. Cheers!
