Introducing Syncstone: end-to-end encrypted sync, your vault in any browser and live collaboration!

Keeping one vault in sync across a desktop, a phone and the occasional computer where nothing can be installed is often the hardest part of using Obsidian everywhere. Syncstone is a sync plugin built for exactly that, and it is now available in the community plugins.

How it works

Syncstone keeps your vault in sync on all your devices. Notes are encrypted on your device before they leave it, so the server only ever stores ciphertext and only you can read them.

What it can do

  • Your vault in any browser. On any computer, without installing anything: open syncstone in web, enter your passphrase and keep working with live preview, graph view and search. Decrypted only in your browser, synced back to all your devices.
  • Sync everywhere. Desktop, mobile and any browser. The web app opens your vault without Obsidian, for example on a work or a friend’s computer.
  • Live collaboration. Several people in one note, with every cursor and name visible in real time.
  • End-to-end encrypted. Encrypted on your device before upload, file names included. The server only stores ciphertext, and your passphrase never leaves your devices. Only you can read your notes.
  • Sharing. Share a whole vault, or publish a single note as a read-only link with an optional password and expiry date.
  • Version history. Older versions, trash and restore.
  • Smart merging. When the same note is edited on two devices, the changes are merged line by line. A conflict copy only appears when the very same line was changed on both.

Good to know

  • Syncstone is still in development, so bugs can happen. Please keep your own backup of your vault. The plugin asks you to confirm this before it syncs anything.
  • The plugin is open source (MIT). The server is closed source, and a self-hosted version is planned.
  • Requires Obsidian 1.8.7 or newer.
  • Syncstone is a hosted service with paid storage plans. You can try it for free first.
    • Soon also for Self-Hosting.
