Sync seems to move files to different folders

I understand the instructions but the “bug” is odd and has happened twice with no clear trigger. I have two computers I use the same vault for. Twice now a subfolder has been moved to a different place in the vault. I have no idea why it was moved there. At first I thought the files and the subdirectory had been deleted. There was no way to recover them that I was aware of. File recovery could work but there were 100 files and I do not remember all their names.

But, like I said, the files had been moved. I think it happened during a sync.
I am running 1.8.0 The last time it happened I blamed myself. This time I know it was not me.

Before opening a new bug report, please search the forum for duplicates and follow the Troubleshooting Guide.

  • We only consider bugs that are reproducible in the sandbox vault or a vault with no third-party plugins/no css snippets/default theme.
  • For Linux, we only accept bug reports that are reproducible with our Appimage or Snap package under Gnome or KDE.
  • Developer issues with the API should go here
  • Themes and Custom CSS issues should go here

Additional information

Can you share your “Show debug info”?

Even if you don’t know exactly what steps to reproduce, the bug template asks for your environment. Which would tell us the basics like what your operating system is, or if your Obsidian is out of date, or if there is a suspect plugin to investigate.

Until more info can be narrowed down, I’m moving this to Help.

I disabled Copilot and 3D Graph (that is fun only for local graphs). Both of them showed errors in the console. I had not looked before when I had sync going.

I have moved my active vault to OneDrive. The old one, where the problems occurred, is still in place and I can safely run a test or two on it.

I would like to get this resolved because I sync my vaults between a mac, pc, and android phone. Obsidian sync makes that possible. Otherwise, I may have to sacrifice my Android Phone. It simply does not play nice with OneDrive and the Mac does not play nice with GoogleDrive.

This is extremely out of date, and you should reinstall from a fresh download. This may or may not be relevant to your issue, but you’re likely missing some key upgrades and security patches. Your plugins appear to be up to date, but they might be interacting oddly with old components of Obsidian. It’s hard to say.

This is why we ask to see your environment. If you had posted a bug report before trying without plugins, it wouldn’t be accepted. For example, did you consider “Auto Note Mover” might be moving your notes? (That might not be the problem. I’ve never tried it. “Move” is right in the name. It’s worth checking your settings carefully. And even if the settings are good, plugins like this might be causing race-conditions as you sync.)

Just to make sure: you mean you have stopped using Obsidian Sync, and are using OneDrive now? I’m sure you know, but it’s very important not to mix two cloud sync tools together. That’s another common cause of data corruption.

“before when I had sync going” makes me think you have, so good. Just double-checking!

Lastly, what other information can you think of? Subfolders are being moved. Is there anything noteworthy about the name of these subfolders? Do the names match an existing note? Do you have duplicate subfolder names? Any odd characters/unicode/emoji/diacritics/punctuation in the folder or subfolder names? etc. etc. Anything you can think of.

In the past, WhiteNoise has also asked to see the Sync log. It might be appropriate to email support about this, and include that log file. But they’ll likely also want you to test without plugins.
