Sync Daily notes (and others?) Overwritten without notification

Steps to reproduce

I wake up in the morning in bed. I write on my daily note on my phone.

I then go to my computer, write all day on my computer, including the daily note.

The note was never synced from my android.

Then, I go back to my android, write more in the daily note.

Then, I noticed the daily note is different on my computer. I go to sync and check the log.

Then, after closing the daily note on android, the daily note on my Android overwrites the daily note on my computer, losing all content.

Version history shows that it was just replaced, paragraph for paragraph, with no warning or notification.

Using v 19.4

Did you follow the troubleshooting guide? [Y/N]

I can’t really try this in a separate vault as I would have to buy another sync license

Expected result

I expect either:

  1. A notification that they have both changed. Which do I want to keep?

OR

  1. At least the desktop note placed under the android note. (in the same file)

Optimally, I expect the sync system to work, so that the current ‘newest’ version is on all systems (that’s how I imagine sync to work), and always keeping the newest up to date. At the very least, I expect it to make sure it isn’t deleting content without notifying me first… :

Additional information

Can you share the sync logs for the note where this happened?

Yes. See below. I went through the last 10 days and found it was pretty much only July 1 and July 2. Not sure if I did something different there…

It seems that the problem may have to do with my VPN. I am in Mullvad (on both machines). And either it delays or breaks the sync…but there is no green checkbox on android to tell if it’s actually syncing or not…

Turning it off just erased the desktop version again…

the sync status is in the right sidebar on mobile.

How does the sync history (not the whole sync logs) looks like for that specific file. On both desktop and mobile.

History looks like this for the last three days:

Whenever I made a change, it just deletes the old material (in red) and then inserts a new sentence above it (in green).

Copy/paste to restore is a pain because the sentences are interleaved (one sentence from old, one sentence from new doc, red and green alternating) in the version history file…

?

I think you can toggle off the diff view.

Turning off diff just shows the new version? I guess I could go back to the previous save? But that is no long term solution…I have all the data for now.

If I look at the version history of the last three days, there is a deleted sentence (unrelated from previous doc) and a ‘new sentence’ from the android version all the way through the version.

You can use the Sync Version History and Fire Recovery plugin to recover your notes.

I am still trying to assess if there is a bug on our end here of if this is case where the merge result is unsatisfactory.

Can you provide a screenshot of the right sidebar view of the sync version for one of the files where the destruction happened.

I need a screenshot of that from the desktop side and one from the mobile side.

Thanks

ok, from this screenshot, it doesn’t look like it deleted everything. It deleted one line that it should have kept “Everyone…”

That was the only line that was in the other document.

The previous day, it deleted multiple paragraphs and substituted the other document wholesale.

So, if there were more, it would have kept going…

According the screenshot, there were many other lines, all untouched except two deletion and two addition.

How does the screenshot look like for the “3 hours ago” and “10 hours ago”.

Yes, because there was no content that was inserted in either for them to conflict…

So, the pixel one saved the initial template (correct) but it didn’t save the changes until AFTER the desktop (which was changed later) was saved. So, the desktop saved a version that the pixel had already replaced, but not synced.

This other screenshot shows that there are 15 more lines and those were not touched.

because they were identical to the version first uploaded

From what in these series of screenshot there is only one line that was removed that you may have not intended to. Am I wrong?

This was yesterday’s. The entire one note was deleted and replaced by the other note, line by line…

this has happened 3 days in a row.

Is the issue clear yet?

thank you for your time and looking into this

Basically, the Android isn’t syncing as fast as I want…the purple circle just keeps spinning and nothing happens. If it synced quickly back and forth, these problems could never happen. It gets stuck at ‘initializing’.

This has been since I installed 1.9.3 to use bases. Downgrade?

There was no change to sync.
