I initially put my vault in a Google Drive folder for extra backup, not realizing it might conflict with Obsidian Sync.
I’m seeing files randomly revert to older versions—is this a known sync conflict issue?
To use Obsidian Sync exclusively, do I just need to move my vault out of Google Drive? And what do most people do for backups when relying solely on Obsidian Sync?

I personally use the Local Backup community plugin along with a cloud service for frequent automatic backups that I save for a limited time. And an external drive for period backups that get saved long term.
You can keep a synced vault in Drive on a single device, but if you do it on multiple devices, then Sync and Drive will interfere with each other (the same problem will occur when you use any 2 sync systems on the same files).
