In the recent catalyst releases, Obsidian has switched from MathJax to Temml. I think this is a mistake, at least at this time, and would like to urge the developers to keep MathJax.
I’ve got a bunch of existing notes that are broken by the switch to Temml. It looks like the most frequent culprit is use of DeclareMathOperator; often I’ve got blocks similar to this in notes:
$$\renewcommand{\v}[1]{\mathbf{#1}}
\newcommand{\m}[1]{\mathrm{#1}}
\newcommand{\T}[0]{^\mathrm{T}}
\DeclareMathOperator{\E}{\mathbb{E}}
\DeclareMathOperator*{\argmax}{arg\,max\,}
\DeclareMathOperator*{\argmin}{arg\,min\,}$$
This sort of stuff doesn’t work in the recent releases.
As an Obsidian user who frequently writes math, LaTeX compatibility is the top priority — it is much more important than binary size, responsiveness (within reason), etc. MathJax has historically, and is still, the leader on this front. I can understand the desire to swap out a heavy dependency with something that specifically targets only the relevant rendering technology for Obsidian, but please recognize that, right now, there are not any other libraries that match MathJax in terms of LaTeX compatibility, which is, again, the only thing that matters to me as a user.
