Support .mkv file format on mobile

Use case or problem

I often screen record using OBS Studio and use .mkv format since it allows the recording to be recovered in the case of issues. When recording short screen captures to embed in a note, I usually remember to switch to record .mp4 but often forget. Then I need to convert the .mkv to .mp4 in order for it to be viewable on mobile.

Proposed solution

It would be really nice if Obsidian supported .mkv files on mobile which would solve this inconvenience.

Thanks!

Can other apps on your device play them? If so, that’s a potential workaround. If not, the system may lack the needed codec.

Support for audio, video, and other files depends on the codecs available on your device. (Accepted file formats - Obsidian Help)

We generally support what is at the intersection of Chrome/Chrome Mobile/Safari Mobile. If it’s not natively provided by them, it won’t work in Obsidian.

This all makes sense. Thanks for the info. Now that I checked, @CawlinTeffid was right that my device doesn’t even support .mkv without a third party app.
