Superfluous space required before inline footnote

Steps to reproduce

Write an inline footnote by attaching ^[ directly to a word or sentence. The styling gets messed up. Adding a space before the ^[ resolves this, but the space is retained in the read view and, what is worse, in pandoc/pdf output.

Expected result

The extra space should not be needed to produce proper styling in edit view.
