Startup, Instant Access to Daily Notes

Either a way to start Obsidian straight to daily notes without any overhead, or fast track that part of the application. Initial startup is too slow.

It can take 7 to 10 minutes from launch to use when it comes to daily notes. If I don’t already have Obsidian open, that’s enough time to forget what I was going to jot down.

If it’s text based, I open notebook or Zettlr then start capturing the concept there. These are often article ideas, tasks, or other details that go into a timeline in the daily notes.

I’ve tried reducing the number of plug-ins, changing the load order, and it’s near instant on a blank vault. However, on Windows 10 (and 11) opening the vault triggers the “Antimalware Service Executable” that sucks up most of the CPU.

If there was a launch option that let me into a light version, while Obsidian loaded in the background, I could jot down my note or paste an image in the tool I enjoy most.

I have a launch script that opens both Obsidian and VScode. Most times I let them both load while I get some tea, or eat breakfast. however, when I need to jot something down or start a writing session – it’s easier to open an edit in VScode, or launch a different application.

This leads me to believe it is Obsidian specific. If I do a global search of the vault in VS Code (without Obsidian open) it also kicks off Windows Antimalware but I can still open files. It may have something to do with Obsidian indexing.

After Antimalware is done, Microsoft Compatibility Telemetry kicks off. My goal is to go from boot to daily note in as few seconds as possible.

I have 31K notes, 3.4K folders, an okay laptop with SSD. The system is powerful enough to run Docker Desktop with Kubernetes (nothing starts on boot, but I can run a VS Code devcontainer faster then edit faster than an Obsidian boot.)

Once Obsidian gets start, it’s very snappy.

This is a problem with your computer. You need to figure out what’s going on.

I would look into how/why Windows Defender is scanning your Obsidian folder. "Antimalware Service Executable” is the clue to what’s going on here.

The feature request is instant low overhead access to “Daily Notes” – like OneNote clips, or double clicking the file into an editor. It’s Obsidian’s interaction with window systems in general.

Something about how it is indexing is touching a bunch of files which triggers antimalware. Zettlr and VS Code don’t do this on the startup. The trigger only happens with a global search.

Does Obsidian read every file on startup to build an index? Or does it look at last modified to refresh the index based on what has changed since last opened? I wasn’t reporting a bug. I’m suggesting a feature to capture notes with less overhead within the Obsidian tool.

We have a test vault with over 100K notes and it opens in a few seconds.

Indexing is done only once and Obsidian does not wait for indexing to be completed to start.

There is a problem that is specific to your system.

I guess it boils down to getting a faster computer. I might as well budget a new one every year.

which computer do you have?
