Spellcheck bugged out after modifying Custom Dictionary.txt

Steps to reproduce

This section assumes that your secondary mouse button is the right one, which is the default on most systems. It also assumes you’re using Windows. If not, the file paths may be different.

  1. In a fresh Obsidian Vault (sandbox is fine), open a new file and type something incorrectly.
  2. Right click the red underline and add the word to the custom (user defined words) dictionary.
  3. Go to User/AppData/Roaming/obsidian, and delete the file ‘Custom Dictionary.txt’.

I am not sure what this path is on macOS / Linux, but it is the central application storage. It’s the same directory the Sandbox Vault gets placed in.

Did you follow the troubleshooting guide? [Y/N]

yep!

Expected result

The words defined as ‘correct’ previously would be no longer part of the user dictionary, and would be marked incorrect.

Actual result

The words defined as ‘correct’ don’t show up in the custom words list (Settings → Editor → Spellcheck → ‘Gear’ icon), but are also not underlined (corrected). When typing a slightly different version of them, it shows the original under the suggestions.

Environment

SYSTEM INFO:
Obsidian version: v1.6.7
Installer version: v1.6.7
Operating system: Windows 11 Home 10.0.22631
Login status: not logged in
Insider build toggle: off
Live preview: on
Base theme: adapt to system
Community theme: none
Snippets enabled: 0
Restricted mode: on

Additional information

I have tried:

  • restarting obsidian
  • restarting computer
  • reinstalling obsidian
  • trying in sandbox vault

More info:

  • this is a global issue; the attempts at reproduction between my normal vault and sandbox vault are synced
  • the issue is that i’m stuck with these words not being defined as correct but being treated as correct

Thanks for helping!

Update: The issue was resolved. The words list is stored in an additional file:

C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Spelling\neutral\default.dic

I found it in another thread (special thanks to user @Digger for the help!) → Dictionary - where is it?

Best,
