Is there a way to sort footnotes/footnote numbers (using a keyboard key)?
I don’t mean the footnote texts at the end of the file, but the numbers (references) in the text.
By default, they are numbered in the order in which they were inserted.
The numbers in the text would have to be reassigned and the order below adjusted accordingly.
Linter plugin has a footnote re-index feature.
Some other footnote plugins may be able to do the same but they have not been updated for a long time and personally, I didn’t touch them. In Linter I trust.

Yes, I second the vote for the Linter plugin. It’s very good, and it can renumber your footnotes, among many other features.
