Simple question from a beginner re adding properties

Hello all,

I am trying to accomplish the following. I want to add a set of properties to the files I create. For example, I have a file property vault. Each time I want to add a specific vault property, I need to do it manually. How can I use a shortcut (I tried the QuickAdd plugin with no success), and when I execute it, it adds a set of properties. I know I can create templates that include a set of properties prepopulated. But I want to add properties selectively. Hope what I am asking makes sence. Thanks in advance.

Assuming you have created different templates, each of which has these different sets of properties you want in certain files, Templater plugin has an option to automate inserting it per folder. Eg, I have a book template that includes all the properties I want those notes to have (as well as some stuff inside the note) and whenever I create a new note in the Books folder, it automatically inserts that template. Same for some other folders where you want to use the same template for each note there. This is extremely easy to set up, and the reason I haven’t really dug into Quick Add much. From my scant knowledge of it, you can use that to automate inserting templates more flexibly. For instance, in my example create a note with books template and put it in the Books folder. Assign a hotkey to it and use when that’s the kind of note you want to create. Someone fluent with Quick Add could help in more detail, but if per folder templates fit your usecase, that feature of Templater takes literally a minute to set up

I don’t know enough about QuickAdd to help with it, but it seems like a good avenue to explore if you can find more helpful info about it.

I’m not sure I follow. Why does using multiple templates (for the different things you want to selectively add) not work?

CawlinTeffid,

Your question helped me figure it out. I thought applying a template would replace contents (file properties), but it does add, which is what I wanted to do . That will work.

Thank you.

Note that if the property type can only contain a single value, and there’s already a value for it in the note, the template will apparently overwrite it. Otherwise (if there isn’t a value yet, or if it’s a list property regardless of whether it has values or not) they’ll add/merge.

Yes, that will work. Thanks again.
