donmccurdy has made a brilliant plugin called Field Recorder (installable currently via BRAT).
This has resolved my key issues with the Audio Recorder plugin and may be helpful for others on this thread - thank you for your work, Don!
I still hope features like these could be included in the core plugin in future so this is more accessible.
