Greetings!
Unsure if this fits under features, plugins or help, so feel free to move around if needed. I’ll make this as short as possible.
When using the tags pane, it displayes the amount of instances instead of the amount of unique tags that are nested, or even the amount of notes that include them.
+200 countries! That’s insane! And it could also be misleading for someone that will make use of our projects but knows nothing about how Obsidian works.
How It Currently Works
- “Tag” ––– “# (total instances)”
This represent the amount of times a tag has been used, regardless of any other criteria"
How I Would Like It To Work
- “Tag” ––– "# (unique tags nested (if any)) / # (total instances)
This way, the user can know how many different [Countries] are in the list (30) and how many times said tag is mentioned (209).
Keep in mind that “user” could be a relative, a co-worker, or anyone else that hasn’t worked with / made use of Obsidian before, and someone that doesn’t instinctively know how tags work, like we do.
Other Options
Depending on the project, users might also need to know how many notes include said tag and not only how many times it was placed.
Big vaults take a lot of time indexing the whole list of notes in the search pane when clicked. It would be way easier if it could simply list the amount of notes containing said tag to know what your dealing with (specially handy with project management vaults).
I am well aware that displaying a row of numbers would look too bulky and, in some cases, wouldn’t let you even read the tag’s name. That’s why I think an option should be added to let the user choose if they want either one, all, or even none of them to be displayed. Let the user decide wheter having all # of notes to display is needed or if a minimalistic approach is preferred.
That’s pretty much it. I’m tired of thinking I have a lot of options to chose from and when I want to take a look its just a bunch of repeated tags that simply made numbers go up. Appreciate anyone who takes their time to read and curious to hear your thoughts!
Have a nice week!
Best regards, Z.
