What I’m trying to do
I want to keep using Obsidian as my personal knowledge manager, and I have become visually impaired and need to learn to use VoiceOver for most of my screen use.
The internet seems to say that there are some problems, but the threads are old. I have a brain injury (which caused the visual impairment) and I can’t do as much research and experimentation as I used to.
Can current VoiceOver users recommend plugins and settings that will let me keep using Obsidian?
Right now I just want to be able to do super basic operations
- create read update delete text files
- move the VO cursor through text files with line by line speech
- move between multiple files
- use search to search text in all my files
Note that I do have some vision remaining, but it’s exhausting and painful to use. I’m willing to use vision for an hour at a time to configure & learn things, but long term I need an interface that will work with very very blurry vision.
I’m a novice VoiceOver user so when I can’t get things done with VO, I don’t know whether it’s operator error or inaccessible software. I’ve tried opening up Obsidian and trying to get a single existing file read to me.
- The VoiceOver cursor doesn’t move the way I expect it to
- I can’t control which parts of the document it reads using VoiceOver commands only.
- I need to use the mouse to get it to read the parts of the document I want.
I’m also mystified by the file chooser and the search interface. When I try to use it without using vision, I’m totally mystified about how to use anything. Today I’ll try using the file chooser and search interface with my remaining vision and see if that makes it any easier.
I’ve tried asking Gemini for suggestions, but it doesn’t seem to understand the question, and it’s answers refer to old threads.
