I’m not quite sure where to start…
I was doing a search / research re: macos x-callback-url. I knew that I had somewhere long ago visited a website that hadd all or at least a lot of x-callback-url supporting mac applications. (x-callback-url.com)
I thought I had taken note of it in Obsidian or, previously, Evernote so I searched for plenty of things, URL scheme, etc and finally x-callback-url.
After having found the site, I realized there was nothing in my Obsidian notes, so I set out to create a new note. First I used Obsidian web clipper to create a new note from the x-callback-url.com home page.
So far so good, I then noticed that the name of the note was “Home”, so I wanted to change that to x-callback-url.
The next thing that happened is that Obsidian “replaced” (probably) most of my links (not sure which type) with x-callback-url.
In other words probably a couple of hundred if not more links are gone… and have been replaced by a non functional Clippings/x-callback-url link…
At first I thought I had seen some log window and had hopes of being able to see how / what had been replaced to help me undo what happened, but it seems there is no log…
What are the ways / possibilities to revert this situation?
Thanks for helping out!
In the mean time I’ve done some searching in macos Finder, and that way I could approximately pinpoint the time it happened.
I have restored the relelevant folders from a backup from yesterday.
I will very probably have lost some information but I guess that will come up later.
In the mean time on the lookout for a better backup strategy.
just before or right after (probably before) I had created a note x-callback-url
the web clipper note was called “Home” very probably due to clipping from the “home” section of x-callback-url.com
here the guessing starts: I suppose the cursor must have been positioned within “a” link on the clipping, and then it probably went too fast - don’t now exactly what happened, but “all” similar links (I guess all web-clipper files) were subsequently wrongly altered
So I ended up with numerous notes where “some” link was changed from [link](url of link) to [link](clipper x-callback-url) this way voiding my previous links…
Can you reconstruct what links were changed? Is there a pattern?
Do you use any plugins that automatically rename stuff?
I’m only aware of one mechanism in Obsidian that automatically updates links (see above). It would only update links with the exact same target, but not with different targets.
Maybe you discovered a weird bug. Any idea for a test case, so that we could reproduce it?
As said, I think the common denominator is the web clipper, it did nothing wrong, and the only thing I can think of is that one way or the other my cursor must have been badly positioned “within” a “link” - then it must have asked something in the style of "do you want to update all links with “???” and inadvertently and too fast I have probably aknowledged
What would help, I guess, is some kind of log when e.g. changing or modifying links. With the idea in mind to be able to a) retrace and b) avoid changing e.g. 100 links in a whim…
Just to clarify, I think the question wasn’t what you think caused it. The pattern question was about which links got updated.
It’s very strange though. There must have been some pattern or connection. (In the name of the links which were changed.)
Can you show a few real examples of some links that got changed? (The paraphrased “[link](url of link)” doesn’t really help us spot a pattern.) The “before” versions. But the before and after might be helpful too.
When this happened did you have any other notes named “Home”?
Bonus: Could you share your Show Debug Info? Maybe we’ll spot a clue in your environment or plugins list.

Community plugins: for bugs, please first try updating all your plugins to latest. If still not fixed, please try to make the issue happen in the Sandbox Vault or disable community plugins.
If you want I can get you the Console errors, but then please let me know how best to proceed. I guess just copying and pasting is not the way?
But I do have another question:
I realise that over time the total content of my md files on Obsidian’s sync server has become quite polluted.
Already long time ago, I have tried to take out all md notes and move them to a network folder on my home network, the idea being to use a tool such as Beyond Compare to clean them out and then later move the relevant files back to Obsidian sync.
For a number of reasons this has not worked out as desired.
Is there some way or 3rd party tool (not obsidian) that can be uses to connect to Obsidian sync? Something similar to a typical file transfer application like Filezilla Pro, Forklift or Transmit?
Or do you have any other suggestions?
Clipper seems to work as intended. The question is what happened in Obsidian. It would really help to have a before-after comparison of some files that were updated.
