I’m trying to learn to use Obsidian for storage of writing
I don’t even know how to use this forum format. I lost my previous desktop to a fried motherboard in a power surge. Hard drive was fine and I had all data transferred to the new computer. I can see the file titles in my previous Obsidian vault in the new computer, but have not the slightest idea how or if they will transfer to the new computer and downloaded Obsidian program. I can see now that I need a double filing of ideas. Will it still be possible to get to my previous vault from my new computer? I really don’t understand the directions given online. Thanks
Just to clarify, you can see the folder (“vault”) with all your notes on the new computer when browsing with the system file explorer? It will look something like this on Windows (the .md file icons will be different):
If so, all you need to do is download Obsidian and point it at that folder.
I forget what the first startup onboarding process is, but you want to get to the screen here (second screenshot),
![]()
choose Open folder as vault, and point the file explorer at the folder that all those folders and files are in.
Yes, it looks like what you posted. I will try this. Thanks so much!!
Since Obsidian is now installed on my computer, it no longer shows the screen you printed above. Now I can only get the working screen with menu items on the upper left top and side. I do not understand enough of this program to know if I can “point” the program to the files we have mentioned from any of the options here. I have tried several and am at a loss. So appreciating your help! These were my extra book ms. ideas.
I found my way to a place where I could follow your instructions exactly. It didn’t work. All I have is an empty vault, even though the file list sits taunting me from its folder.
Yay! I sat patiently trying choices from the items you sent me and finally got the old vault to open in the new download. Thanks so much!!!
