Hi!
I’m trying to figure out if there is something causing memory leaks in Obsidian or if my computer just doesn’t have enough memory to run it. I am using Obsidian on a PC with an additional external monitor.
When I open obsidian, with 2 tabs open it is using 2760 mb of memory. My computer is old and memory is low-ish in general, so I can’t tell if this is a normal amount and I just need to figure out the memory on the computer or if it is abnormal. This amount causes obsidian to freeze and I have to force quit. My vault is 72 mb.
I have Obsidian version 1.6.3. I have the community plugins admonition, citations, dataview, style settings, templater and zotero integration. They are all updated and the obsidian itself is updated.
Hm, 2 almost 3 GB of memory usage seems quite high for me. However, 72 MB would be a lot of markdown files, if you did not count any attachments.
Still for me Obsidian usually stays at around 1 GB memory usage with occasional spikes to 2.5 or very rarely 3 GB. I am also using a lot more plugins. However, I don’t use zotero nor citation. The rest of your plugins are also in use by me.
Have you checked if that memory problem also occurs in the Sandbox-Vault?
I turned off the community plug ins, and the memory usage dropped considerably. I turned them all back on, and the memory usage is now staying below about 250 mb. I’m not sure what is going on! It definitely seemed to impact it, but now all the plug ins are active and it is still lower. I don’t understand it but I’ll take it for now. Thanks.
Thanks for your reply. I don’t think I have any attachments, except for a handful of images. I use Obsidian for research and I’m a student, so I have lots of markdown files. I don’t save Pdfs in Obsidian. The images are right under 19 mb. This issue seems to have weirdly resolved itself after turning the plug ins on and off, but for the future, is the sandbox vault just a fake vault I would create to test stuff?
The Sandbox-Vault comes pre-installed and is accessible via the small question mark down left somewhere. It basically is a tutorial-vault, where most functionalities of obsidian are explained and examples are given. I use it often for debugging because it is just a blank vault already populated with a few notes, but without any community plugins or themes. So it’s a quick and easy way to find out if the problem is vault-specific or installer/machine specific.
