Problem
Currently, when working with the Outline and the cursor is within the content of a specific heading, that heading is highlighted.
However, if the cursor is within the content of a heading that is not displayed in the Outline when headings are collapsed, none of the headings are highlighted, making it difficult to navigate in the file.
This is particularly critical when working with large files, where you sometimes need to navigate through top-level headings while interacting with their content. In such cases, the Outline simply doesn’t show which specific heading I’m currently in.
Proposed solution
I would like it so that, in situations where an active, highlighted heading in Outline is collapsed and not visible, it is not that heading that is highlighted, but rather its parent heading, which remains visible in Outline.
As we expand the headings back out, the highlighting should move to the parent headings at lower levels until we’ve expanded all the headings in the Outline, reaching the heading within whose content the cursor is located, and finally, until that heading itself is highlighted.
In this screenshot, the cursor is within the content of the `### Heading 0.1.0` heading, and it is highlighted in Outline.
The cursor remains within the content of the ### Heading 0.1.0 heading; I collapse all the subheadings under the ## Heading 0.1 heading in the Outline, and nothing is highlighted in the Outline. It’s hard to get my orientation.
As I suggested, the first visible parent heading should be highlighted – in this case, ## Heading 0.1.
The cursor is still within the content of the ### Heading 0.1.0 heading; I collapse all the subheadings under the # Heading 0 heading in the Outline, and nothing is highlighted in the Outline either. It’s still difficult to get my orientation. Now, according to my suggestion, it should be # Heading 0, not ## Heading 0.1, that is highlighted, since it is the first visible parent heading relative to the one where the cursor is located.
