I make rather large hierarchies of data in some of my documents, and while the outline is massively beneficial to navigating these documents, it requires a lot of manual collapsing or expanding once the outline reaches a certain length (say, about 1 page) to make it navigable.
This process could be sped up enormously if it supported a default depth so you could hide all of the child elements to make the higher categories easier to browser, much like Confluence’s Page Tree module (would link to documentation but URLs aren’t allowed on this forum). Even better would be +/- collapse buttons next to the standard expand/collapse that would dynamically show/hide each layer.
Another option would be to add a filter so you could simply define the headings you want shown in the outline.
I merged this into Fold/Unfold headings up to specific level hotkeys and then realized it wasn’t quite the same feature request (it’s asking for the same thing but in the body of the note, not the outline). Sorry for any confusion! When I extracted it back out I gave it a shorter title (was: “Improve Outline core plugin by adding custom tree depth expand/contract controls”).
Thank you for correcting this, I was worried when I checked my notifications! Yes, this is indeed a distinct request from hotkeys for collapsing/expanding the headers within documents.
