When I’m unexpectedly greeted by the duplicate page prompt I most often would like to merge the files. Currently to do this the user must click the page settings icon, click ‘merge entire file with’, search for the file of the same name, then click merge.
Proposed solution
The interaction cost for this behavior can be reduced greatly by giving the user the option to merge or not merge the duplicate pages within the duplicate page alert pop up
I’m surprised this hasn’t gotten more traction since it seems to be a default feature in Roam/Logseq and it really helpful for gardening notes. Maybe it has come up under another topic or plugin, but I haven’t found it.
I found this post while looking for a solution to this exact problem. I’m organising loads of old notes. I use Auto Note Mover to move a note with a tag to a folder, e.g. “#abbreviation”. It would be great to have this as a option on the “already exists” dialogue.
Bump for traction!
Billion dollar global insight - Improve Obsidian iPadOS app - “red notice rectangle box”: that says ”There is already a filename with the same name”, by implementing feature where user can “tap on red aforementioned notice box (link) to jump to filename of the same name to add data to the file or next action (eliminate search and other multiple sub steps). Max productivity globally.
I decided to make a note on a new topic, but when I typed in the file name, a little red speech bubble popped up saying “there’s already a file with the same name”
Great! I’ve made notes on this topic before and can continue them.
But to find the file, I then have to search for it, which is a mild inconvenience.
Proposed solution
When that speech bubble pops up, make “a file with the same name” into a link that you can click on to edit the existing file instead of creating a new one.
That is why it can be a good habit to also use the Quick Switcher to create a new file. While typing a name for your new note, you will see similar names pop-up and may want to continue on an existing note you did not anymore remember was there.
